The Sisters of Sinai Prize

The Sisters of Sinai Prize for outstanding scholarship in Christian apocrypha is named in honor of Agnes Smith Lewis and Margaret Dunlop Gibson, sisters who are responsible for a number of significant collections of texts and translations based on manuscripts they viewed or acquired in their travels to Egypt and the Sinai in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Two prizes are awarded every year: one to graduate students for a term paper or published article, and one to early career scholars (0–5 years post PhD) for a published article, essay, dissertation, or monograph. The amount of each prize is $200. The adjudication committee is chosen from the NASSCAL board and funding comes from donations from NASSCAL members.

The deadline for nominations is September 1 of each year. Self-nominations are encouraged. The prize is awarded at a meeting of the Christian Apocrypha Section of the Society of Biblical Literature at the annual meeting in November.

Send your nominations in electronic form to [email protected]. In the interests of privacy, faculty members should not include copies of unpublished works (e.g., term papers and dissertations) when nominating a student; the committee will solicit such materials directly from the nominee.
