1. SUMMARY

This fragmentary leaf was found at Oxyrhynchus during Grenfell and Hunt’s second excavation season. It has been dated by the editors to the second century, based in part on similarities to the hand of P. Oxy. 4009 (tentatively identified as a portion of the Gospel of Peter). The recto (writing with the fibers) begins with a word reconstructed as “he died,” which the editors consider a possible parallel to the ending of Gos. Thom. 63. Then follows a parallel to Matt 6:25//Luke 12:22 (par. Gos. Thom. 36), but closer to Luke’s version (“I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear,” NRSV), seguing into material found in Gos. Thom. 27 (“If you do not fast from the world, you will not find the kingdom. If you do not make the Sabbath a sabbath, you will not see the Father,” trans. Ehrman and Pleše, Apocryphal Gospels). The parallel to Matthew and Luke continues with Matt 6:26//Luke 12:23, this time closer to Matthew (“Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow not reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” NRSV).

The verso (writing against the fibers) runs parallel to Matt 6:28–30, 32b, 33//Luke 12:27–28, 30b–31 (Matthew’s version: “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? Therefore . . . and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well,” NRSV). There is a partial parallel here also to the Greek version of Gos. Thom. 36, which follows Matt 6:25//Luke 12:22 with “You are worth much more than lilies, which neither card nor spin. If you have no clothing, what will you put on? Who might add to your stature? He is the one who will give you your clothing” (trans. Ehrman and Pleše, Apocryphal Gospels).

The parallels to the Synoptic material are said to be “loose,” which may be due to their collection in a harmony or because they derive from oral rather than written traditions.
