1. SUMMARY

Hypom. Matt. begins with the account of the former tax collector’s calling by Jesus (Mark 2:13–14 par.). Levi, Son of Alphaeus, is renamed Matthew as a mark of his new life as an apostle. The story then continues with Jesus in Levi’s house being asked by the Pharisees about his eating with tax collectors (Mark 2:15–17 par.) and the Great Commission (Matt 28:16–20), after which Matthew wrote his gospel. A description of the Gospel’s contents follows. Matthew preaches in Parthia and then returns to the borders of Palestine, where he encounters a vast multitude of people speaking various languages. He endures various hardships—hunger, thirst, persecution from authorities—but continues in his evangelizing efforts. After some time, Matthew moves on to Ethiopia, the region to which he was appointed by lot. There he establishes a school for the Christian faith, performs miracles, healings and exorcisms, makes converts, and is martyred (no details of his death are provided).

Named Historical Figures and Characters: Andrew (apostle), James (son of Zebedee), Jesus Christ, John (son of Zebedee), Matthew (apostle), Peter (apostle), Pontius Pilate.

Geographical Locations: Ethiopia, Galilee, Mount Tabor, Palestine, Parthia, Persia.
