New Research on Apocryphal Christian Literature
May 1–2, 2026 | University of Virginia
In recent decades, research on apocryphal Christian literature has demonstrated that extracanonical works had a substantial impact on the history, literature, art, and theologies of Christians across centuries. This research has also revealed that there is still much more to learn about the history of Christian literary production.
In an effort to chart the landscape of current themes and trends in research, this two-day conference hosted at the University of Virginia called for papers on any topic directly related to Christian apocrypha. Scholars working on apocryphal Christian literature—from a wide range of times, places, and languages—shared the material and questions that interest them most, with an eye toward how their research furthers understanding of the development, significance, and legacies of extracanonical works.
