1. SUMMARY

Papyrus Cairensis 10735 consists of one leaf from a sixth- or seventh-century papyrus codex. The remainder of the leaf is small, measuring 5.3 x 6.3 cm and containing 19 lines of text overall (9 on the recto and 10 on the verso). The extant Greek text is fragmentary, making it difficult for scholars to reconstruct the original context within which this papyrus leaf would have been encountered. Suggestions have ranged from a fragment of a non-canonical gospel text (Grenfell and Hunt) to a portion of a homily or a commentary fragment (Deissmann). One side of the papyrus (typically called the recto, but the order could be reversed) narrates Joseph’s visionary encounter with an angel of the Lord who instructs him to take Mary to Egypt, mirroring Matt 2:13. The other side narrates an angelic figure called the head general (archistrategos) speaking to Mary about Elizabeth’s conception of John in the month of Thoth, as well as John’s role as a servant and forerunner of the Lord’s arrival, mirroring Luke 1:36.

Named historical figures and characters: Elizabeth, Jesus Christ, John (the Baptist), Joseph (of Nazareth), Mary (Virgin).

Geographical locations: Egypt.
