1. SUMMARY

The Gospel of Judas is a dialogue gospel in which Jesus converses with his twelve disciples or with Judas alone in four appearances that take place during eight days before he celebrates the Passover or Last Supper. It was composed in Greek sometime in the middle decades of the second century and was known to Irenaeus of Lyon, who around 180 claimed that “gnostics” had “fabricated” it (Against the Heresies 1.31.1). Only a Coptic translation survives in Codex Tchacos, a fourth-century codex that was discovered in Egypt in the late twentieth century. Gos. Jud. is the third of five known tractates in the codex, appearing on pages 33–58; the text is damaged and barely or not at all legible in places, with about 10% of the text missing.

The anonymous author refers to his work as a “secret report of judgment,” which captures the work’s polemical tone and emphasis on condemnation. The gospel opens with a brief summary of Jesus’ earthly ministry of miracles and teaching as found in the canonical gospels, including his calling of twelve disciples. It then narrates four appearances of Jesus to his disciples or to Judas. In the first appearance Jesus finds the disciples giving thanks (eucharist) over a meal, which he mocks as offered to the god of the disciples; they suggest that Jesus is the son of their god. Only Judas correctly identifies Jesus as having come from the aeon Barbēlō, the second divine principle in (Sethian) gnostic myth. Jesus promises to reveal to Judas mysteries of the kingdom, but warns him that he will not go there. In the second appearance Jesus reveals to the disciples that there is another race (genea), which is great, mighty, and holy and to which the disciples do not belong. In the third appearance the disciples report to Jesus a dream in which they saw corrupt priests sacrificing numerous animals on an altar. Jesus first identifies the disciples as the corrupt priests, sacrificing their followers to their god; he then identifies the priests as star powers who will make a final sacrifice to their god before the last day. Jesus rebuffs the disciples’ request to be cleansed from their sins.

In the fourth and final appearance, Jesus tells Judas why he must sacrifice the man who bears Jesus by explaining the origin and domination of the rulers of this cosmos. Jesus’ narrative presents a simple version of the (Sethian) gnostic myth found also in such works as The Secret Book According to John, The Holy Book of the Great Invisible Spirit (Egyptian Gospel), and First Thought in Three Forms (Trimorphic Protennoia). Jesus concludes by predicting the destruction of the rulers of this cosmos, and he suggests that Judas will replace the chief ruler as the “thirteenth demon.” Jesus enters a cloud and disappears from Judas’ sight.

The gospel then returns to the narratives of the canonical gospels with Jesus praying in the guest room. Jewish scribes approach Judas, who accepts money from them and hands Jesus over to them.
